Cleaning: Always clean your shears before adjusting tension.
During use, hair clippings, chemicals and foreign particles can migrate to the set
screw and clog the pivot joint. Removing debris and particles from shear surfaces
may allow shears to move freely and tension adjustment may not be necessary.
Wipe shear blades with a soft, dry cloth. Put a drop of oil between the blades and
behind the set screw. Open and close the shears several times to work the oil into
the pivot joint. The oil and movement will draw out debris that has become lodged
in the pivot. Wipe the blades clean. Following cleaning, test shears for correct
tension as described below.

Adjusting Tension: Proper adjustment ensures that your shears will cut effectively
and comfortably at any desired position or angle, and that edge sharpness will be
maximized. In general, test your Jaguar shears daily for correct tension or any
time you notice a change in the shears' cutting performance. Please use caution
when handling your shears: your Jaguar blades are extremely sharp.
To test:
Using your thumb and forefinger, grasp the finger handle slightly above the ring.
With your other hand, pull the thumb handle so the blades of the shears open completely
(the thumb handle will be up and the finger handle will be down). Now, release the
thumb handle and allow the weight of the handle to close the blades.
If the blades do not close or do not close enough for the cutting edges to overlap,
gently jiggle or shake the shears. Blades should begin to fall closed.
Tension is too loose if the blades close completely or more than 3/8"
overlap. Follow the instructions in "To tighten tension" (below).
Tension is correct if the blades remain mostly open with no more than
3/8" of the cutting edges overlapping. Proceed with cutting.
Tension is too tight if the blades do not move or do not close enough
for the cutting edges to overlap. Follow the instructions in "To loosen tension"
(below).
Note: Do not use shears if tension is incorrect. Cutting hair when shear tension
is incorrect results in damage to the blade edges, premature dulling, and hand fatigue.
To adjust: Holding shears securely in a closed position, fit the two prongs
of the tension adjustment tool into the small rectangular openings of the flush
screw. For standard set screws, use a dime.
To tighten tension: Turn the screw clockwise 1/16th turn (equivalent to approximately
3-4 minutes on the face of a clock). Check for correct tension using the technique
described above. If tension is still too loose, repeat steps for tightening and
checking tension until it is correct.
To loosen tension: Turn the screw counterclockwise 1/16th turn
(equivalent to approximately 3-4 minutes on the face of a clock). If blades close
completely or to more than 3/8" overlap of the cutting edge, they are too loose.
Follow the directions for tightening and checking tension. Back to the top
Trouble Shooting
Shears bend or push hair: Clean and check shears for proper tension
and adjust as needed (see above).
Hair catches or pulls during cutting or slide cutting: Clean and check
shears for proper tension and adjust as needed (see above).
Shears feel rough when cutting: Clean carefully. If shears still feel
rough, damage to the blade may have occurred.

If problems persist after cleaning and checking and adjusting the tension, sharpening
may be required. In many cases your shears can be serviced by our in-house experts
and returned to you as good as new. To prolong the life of your Jaguar shears, and
to maintain top cutting performance, we recommend that full-time stylists who use
their shears daily sharpen them every 6-9 months.
